Commonly named String of Pearls or String of Beads. This plant can now be found in the new Genus; Curio, but still commonly found in the Senecio genus. Native to the dry areas of South West Africa.
The Senecio rowleyanus is a beautiful, trailing plant with long, fragile, stems reaching lengths of up to a metre. Small, pea shaped, water storing leaves alternate along the stem, making this plant perfect for hanging containers.
String of Pearls are easy to keep, although some would argue this. Some common issues include;
*soil level too low. Ensure the soil level is the same height as the top of the pot. If the soil is too low it can cause the plant to bald at the base.
*Root rot is a common issue with these plants. They never want to have their roots sitting in water. A good drink is recommended but be sure to allow all excess water to drain away and do not water again until the plant is completely dry. If in doubt, it can go without!
They do require bright, indirect sunlight. If your plant is in the right environment, it will thrive and you will find yourself cutting back the stems and hopefully propagating the cuttings!
